The underwriting consultant will work directly with field advisors and clients with insurance applications. This position is responsible for underwriting insurance applications within strict guidelines approval authority minimum $3,000,000 and/or $5,000 monthly benefit on disability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review applications from advisors to determine insurability, categorize the risk to determine the appropriate premium and rating class.
  • Review and assess medical and non-medical requirements, partner with medical director, leadership and peers as needed to determine insurability. On average, actively manage case load of 250 plus applications.
  • Direct contact with field to gather financial and medical information on clients, communicate underwriting risk assessment decisions and to assist the field throughout the insurance process.
  • Provide formal mentoring of less experienced underwriters. Life Insurance approval authority minimum $3,000,000 and/or $5,000 monthly benefit on disability amounts for underwriter trainees.
  • Travels to field offices or presents via Web-ex, conference calls, or other available technology for the purposes of coaching, training and relationship building with advisors.
  • Quality assurance reviewing randomly selected cases completed by a specific underwriter that have a higher premium value. Review for appropriate thought process and risk assessment decision and providing coaching and feedback.



Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent
  • 5-7 years relevant experience with Individual Life and/or Disability Underwriting
  • Life Insurance approval authority minimum $3,000,000 and up to $5000 monthly benefit on disability.
  • Demonstrated decision making skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills.
  • Ability to coach and mentor others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fellow, Association of Life Underwriters (FALU)
  • Certified Life Underwriter CLU
  • Life Insurance approval authority up to $5,000,000 and up to $8000 monthly benefit on disability.

Base Pay Salary

95,000 - 110,000
